At he beginning of this year I met Mahdiy Drummond.
I think it was January 31st, 2025.
He is a very interesting human.
Mahdiy, aka Blicky Bobby on Instagram, is a comedian in New York City. I first discovered him in a short documentary film made by friend Brian Chu, called Comedy During Corona. The film tracked Mahdiy through the streets of New York interacting with comedians as they tried to navigate telling jokes during COVID lockdown.
I really liked the film, but more importantly, I liked how Mahdiy looked at the world, made funny artful IG videos, and thought about things.
I said to myself, I need to meet this man.
So again, at the beginning of this year, in desperate need of laughter, I DM’d Mr. Drummond and told him that I would love to work with him, do some kind of video work because right now I want it to make people laugh with the work I am making.
He seemed very interested and replied with a ✅ and so began our freindship.
Eventually, we met up one night at a small, weird art venue in Bushwick Brooklyn where Mahdiy and some other comedians were doing a comedy show.
And I made this video of Mahdiy doing a ten minute set.
The jokes were great, but what was even better was watching him work and captivate a crowd.
I really loved the way he uses comedy to hypnotize people and allow them to peer into his mind and connect with him.
It was the first time I shot a comedy show.
It was incredibly fun, but it also was the beginning of a a new a new collaboration that I'm excited about.
So this video is just a the first of hopefully many.
They won't all be stand-up videos.
They will just swim in the medium of comedy.
And I'm hoping that Mahdiy will be my guide.
